Tour: Dries Devenyns third after long day in the front
After the hard mountain stage of yesterday, the peloton started for a stage from Chambery to Gap today. Dries Devenyns attacked with Mario Aerts after the first intermediate sprint. Kiryienka and Paulinho bridged the gap quickly, 40 kilometres later Bouet and Rolland also made it into the day`s breakaway. The peloton let the six escapees go, they established a eleven minute lead. With 15 kiloemetres to go Aerts attacked on the final climb, which wasn`t categorized for the mountain classification. Devenyns responded quickly and went on solo, but he was over taken by Kiryienka and Paulinho.
The two leaders build up a half minute lead, while Devenyns was caught by Aerts and Rolland. The two were clearly the strongest riders of the day’s break and quickly took a minute out of their erstwhile companions. In the sprint-a-deux Paulinho outsprinted Kiryienka with a few centimetres, taking the stage win in Gap. Devenyns took the third place, 1 minute and 26 seconds behind.
Pineau takes back polka dot jersey
The escapees took the most points at the summit of the Côte de Laffrey (1st category), but there were some points left for the chasers. Yesterday Charteau took over the polka dot jersey from Jerome Pineau. Both riders had 85 points, but Charteau did better on yesterday`s final climb. Today Pineau wanted the jersey back, so he battled it out with Charteau on the Côte de Laffrey. Pineau kept Charteau behind him, taking 1 point advantage on his compatriot. Enough to take back his polka dot jersey, with Charteau close behind him. Moreau is 29 points behind in third place.
