Nikolas Maes is one of the new riders for our team in 2010. He already gained some good results in several races and was at the start line of the Omloop het Nieuwsblad. A good moment to introduce Nikolas a little more. The focus is on Nikolas Maes this time.
Nikolas, you're new at our team. What's your opinion about the team so far?
I think it's a team which fits me perfectly. They focus on the same races I like to focus on. Everything in the team is well arranged and professional.
How did you build up your training during this winter?
As usual, starting with slow short trainings on the road, but besides that training I also like to work on back/front corps muscles. Together with multiple specialists I armed myself for a good season.
How does your race schedule look like for the first part of 2010?
Most of the race selections will depend on my shape during the first 2 months I guess, but normally I'm in for the flemish Classics.
You showed some good things during your first races, satisfied about your start at Team Quick Step?
Yes and no, I participated in the Tour Down Under and this race came a little bit too soon. Now, afterwards, I'm filling the little gaps in the season preparation. Overall I'm happy about my season start, knowing it's the first time in 3 years I actually start training and racing before March.
What are your goals for the 2010 season?
First of all: make a good impression on sports directors and staff. I'm not immediately focused on own success. I also want to gather a lot of experience in the team and learn about their perception of racing.

A small dilemma: Sprinting or riding over cobblestones?
First riding hard on the cobblestones, then sprinting with a small group. Hopefully with a lot of teammates with me!
Some personal stuff now. What is your favorite kind of music?
All kind of music. Modern, classics and go on. As long as there's a rhytm in it!
What's your ultimate dream?
No dreams, only a mid-long term schedule to win a classic, hopefully THE classic!
What's your nickname?
Mostly I'm called 'Nike'
In love, engaged or married?
Living happy together with my girlfriend Katrijn.
What is your favourite food?
No one believes it, but I can enjoy myself the most with rosted bread with Nutella on it! Smooshed fruit comes on second.
